Downstage with Deb

Are you interested in helping with costumes? If so, we can find the perfect fit for you in our organization.

There are many different aspects to costuming. From taking measurements, to sewing clothing, to ordering extravagant pieces from a professional costume warehouse, and more, there is something for everyone. Whether you are new to the craft or experienced, there is something you can do to help. Below are just some of the activities completed by the Costume Mistress and others involved in getting the actors ready for their performance on stage.

  • Taking measurements for the actors and logging on the chart to help identify the sizes needed for each costume.
  • Researching clothing styles for a variety of historical time periods such as the 1960's or the 1800's.
  • Alterations and modifications of clothing and accessories to better fit the actor and the character.
  • Shopping at thrift stores and garage sales for costume pieces and accessories such as hats, gloves, shoes, and jewelry.
  • Shopping at sewing and craft stores for fabric, notions, and other materials used in the design process.
  • Using a pattern and operating the sewing machine to make new clothing pieces.
  • Sewing household items such as pillows, curtains, and tablecloths.
  • Contacting a a professional costume shop and ordering rental costumes for special costumes that can't be made in-house.
  • Tracking each costume piece as it is received, worn, cleaned, and returned to its proper location.
  • Laundering, ironing, folding, re-stocking the costumes in the warehouse
  • Working with hair stylists and wig experts.
  • Working with makeup artists.
